19-Year-Old Looks Forward To Serving As GOP Delegate

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Democratic National Convention ends Thursday night in Denver.

Next week, Republicans will meet in the Twin Cities.

A Tennessee delegate is one of the nation's youngest GOP delegates.

"You know nobody knows what a delegate is and when I say national convention even some of my teachers have been like what?" said 19-year-old Lauren Fairbanks, a Middle Tennessee State University student.

She supported John McCain in a high school project last year.

"That's when (former Sen. Fred) Thompson was still in the mix," she said.

Her support made it to state GOP leaders and led to her election as a delegate.

Most of the students are excited about the game Thursday night and the new semester.  But Lauren's excited about what will happen next week. She looks forward to helping shape the course of our country.

"I'll be down on the floor and whenever they ask to cast your vote, I'll cast my vote for McCain," she said.

"I think universities across the country are very interested in students being engaged in all sorts of the political process and community involvement," said MTSU Dean Thomas Cheatham. "We're very interested in that here at MTSU."

Lauren is proud to be part of the political process and a part of history.

On Saturday, Lauren will travel to Minnesota from her home in Chattanooga.  She hopes the experience will be the beginning of her involvement in state politics.
