BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - More people who want to look their best are turning to cosmetology schools.
Instructors said they provide a new do at a discount price and they offer people a chance to learn a new career.
To some people, a hair salon is just a hair salon, but for others, it's a place to get away from it all.
"Especially in a recession time and people have lost their jobs and they really need somebody to talk to, they can just kind of relax with their hairdresser, " said cosmetology student Lacy Eakin. "You become one of their best friends by cutting their hair and making them feel better about themselves."
That comfort usually comes at a price, but at the Beauty Institute in Brentwood, the bottom line may surprise some.
"They're able to get a good quality service at a discount price," said Kelly Kennedy, Beauty Institute director
During these tough times, more and more people are turning to cosmetology schools as a way to get pampered without paying too much.
Enrollment is also up at some cosmetology schools.
"People are looking for alternative avenues to get back on their feet, find a different career that they can step into and make a living for themselves and their family," Kennedy said.
Folks looking to start over and looking for a profession that's a little more recession-proof.
"People are always going to need a haircut," Eakin said.
A licensed instructor is always nearby when a beauty school student works with a customer.
The increase in business means students receive more on-the-job training.
Time is one thing to keep in mind if you decide to try out a beauty school. It usually takes a little longer to finish because the students are learning along the way.
