CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - A man gives life-saving CPR to another man who was declared clinically dead at a crash scene.

The rescue happened last week when Tim Cross, a former professional football player and father of four, had a medical emergency while driving. Then the 40-year-old slammed his sports utility vehicle into a tree in Clarksville.

Trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation by the Navy, Drew Kirk pulled Cross from the vehicle and administered the emergency medical procedure.

Cross has a heart condition known as cardiomyopathy, "a serious disease in which the heart muscle becomes inflamed and doesn't work as well as it should," according to the American heart Association Web site. "There may be multiple causes including viral infections."

Cross was released from the hospital Monday.

Kirk, who was honorably discharged from the Navy, is a student at Austin Peay State University. He plans to move to Chicago for culinary school.
