Nashville Named 8th Unhappiest City In America

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - BusinessWeek has named Nashville one of America's most unhappy cities.

According to the national magazine, the rate of suicide, crime, divorce, and even the number of cloudy days played a role in making the city unhappy.

Downtown musician Allen Burg said he does not believe the poll.

"Nashville is the best place in the world," said Burg.

Rotimi Ariyo visited Nashville from North Carolina. He offered a similar opinion.

"Its downtown, this is the heart of, you know, country... Nashville," said Ariyo.

Many people were upset with BusinessWeek magazine for naming Music City the 8th unhappiest city in the country.

"They must not know anything about Nashville and the people here, so I disagree," said resident Lee Walker.

According to the magazine only Portland, St. Louis, New Orleans, Detroit, Cleveland, Jacksonville, and Las Vegas are more miserable than Nashville.

Residents believe it must be a misprint.

"Everybody is just extremely friendly. That's the reason I moved here," said Walker.

In recent years, Nashville has also been named one of the friendliest cities, a great place for relocating families, a top spot for relocating singles, and one of the best sports cities.

"I love it... love it. Beyond, beyond love," said McMinnville resident, Kristi Tenpenny.

Nashville is, of course, a music lovers paradise.

"There's no place better for a guitar player than Nashville, Tennessee," said Burg.

BusinessWeek also used the unemployment rate in its poll. The national unemployment rate is 7.6 percent. Davidson County was below that with a 7 point unemployment rate.
