Dollar General Corporation donated $50,000 to Hattie Cotton Elementary School in East Nashville as a part of the corporation's "Pencil Partner" program.

Friday's celebration included the major donation as well as a song from American Idol star La-Porsha Renae and a book reading from the Tennessee First Lady Chrissy Haslam.

"I don't know what I was thinking. At first I was thinking 'did I read this right?' Then I had to read it to myself," said Jay Adams.

"This is a very significant and generous donation. We're so appreciative. The teachers and the students are going to specifically benefit from this donation specifically earmarked for improved reading for our students," said Chris Henson.

The Dollar General Corporation, which is located in Goodlettsville, has been the 'Pencil Partner' to Hattie Cotton Elementary for 30 years.
