A push to recruit more women for the Army brought a very special general to Nashville.

Army Brigade General Donna Martin spoke to high school students and Kiwanis Club members this morning.

General Martin said taking down the hurdles for women in combat jobs is not just good for women but the army as a whole.

"We have opened up all the closed MOS's to women to give them opportunities to serve in any capacity that they want. And you know what's very interesting is that we're finding that young women can do the exact same things as young men. And 51% of the population is female so why wouldn't we give them that opportunity,” she said.

General Martin is the first African American to be a U.S. Army Recruiting Command Deputy.
