A transformer explosion was to blame for a power outage that left more than 1,000 residents in the dark in south Nashville.

The incident happened early Wednesday morning when a tree fell in an alley on Peachtree Street.

An official with Nashville Electric Service said that likely caused a chain reaction which caused the transformer to explode.

At one point, more than 1,100 customers were without power.

Residents in the area reported hearing a loud explosion and called 911.

Businesses on Nolensville Pike from Thompson Lane to Peachtree Street, right before the ramp for Interstate 440, were without power for hours.

NES officials said power has been restored to most businesses.
