Governor Bill Haslam sent a request to President Barack Obama asking him to expedite a major disaster declaration for five Tennessee counties.

The counties included in the request on Friday were Coffee, McMinn, Polk, Sequatchie, and Sevier.

Sevier County was devastated by wildfires, and five tornadoes touched down in the other counties just one day after the fires.

“My goal is to help ensure these counties have what they need to rebuild and recover from these heartbreaking disasters,” Haslam said. “The state and our local partners continue to work through the damage assessments, provide necessary services to help those in need, and get our neighbors and friends back on their feet.”

The governor sent a request earlier in the week and asked for that request to be expedited Friday.
