A crash on Interstate 24 shut down the westbound lanes in Davidson County and backed up traffic for nearly ten miles.

Officials said the wreck happened around 5:45 a.m. Friday in the westbound lanes near Exit 56 for State Route 255/Harding Place.

All westbound lanes were closed immediately following the crash.

Police reported nine vehicles were involved. Reports stated an officer was on the side of the interstate helping someone change a tire. Several drivers tried to get over to give them room, causing a chain reaction crash.

Around 6:15 a.m. only the right lane remained blocked to westbound traffic. Eastbound drivers were not affected.

Crews said the roadway was cleared around 8 a.m.
