The Metro Police Department has rallied around one of their own officers battling Leukemia.

Brandon Bilbrey, 28, has been an officer at the Madison Precinct for the last four years. This week, he learned he had been diagnosed with Leukemia. The news came as a shock to him and his family.

“It came out of left field,” said Bilbrey. “If someone told me I had Leukemia the day before, I would have lost a million dollar bet to them.”

Bilbrey’s wife Kim and his three young children commute from Springfield each day to see him at the Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at TriStar Centennial Medical Center in Nashville.

“It’s been traumatic, for sure,” said Kim Bilbrey, Brandon’s wife. “We’re used to him always coming home and being there, and now we are adjusting.”

Brandon said he won’t be able to work for at least 40 days while he undergoes treatment.

One of his fellow officers started a gofundme account to help his family with expenses. Officers have also been checking on him, and visiting him at the hospital.

The Nashville Fraternal Order of Police has also shared the account on social media, and in a newsletter to members in an effort to get even more donations.

“There have been people coming out of the woodwork,” said Brandon Bilbrey. “They have gone above and beyond.”

Brandon said with the help of two different medications, there is a very high percentage his Leukemia will be cured.  His family remains hopeful.

“I think we just have faith,” said Kim Bilbrey. “I don’t think anything different at this point.”
