A Nashville mother was arrested for allegedly trying to smother her son while he was in the hospital.

According to Metro Nashville Police officials, 22-year-old Alexis Bagwell allegedly tried to harm her son on two occasions while at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

She and her 5-month-old son, Josiah, who was a patient, were at the hospital for a reported seizure issue Josiah suffered from in January 2016.

On two occasions, January 26 and 27, medical personnel had to come to the child’s room due to issues while he was alone with his mother.

In one situation, Josiah had stopped breathing.  In the other, Bagwell called nurses saying that Josiah’s breathing had stopped, even though he still was.

After months of investigating, detectives believed the first incident was the result of her unsuccessful attempt to smother him.

Josiah was placed into foster care, where he was healthy. His mother was charged with one count of attempted murder and three counts of aggravated child abuse.

One of the grand jury counts relates to her alleged abuse of Josiah while he was a patient at Vanderbilt in October 2015, when he was two months old.

Bagwell was being held in lieu of $100,000 bond. She will be arraigned in Criminal Court in the near future.
