Police began searching for a convicted sex offender in Nashville after he allegedly cut off his ankle monitoring device and tossed it into the Cumberland River.

According to an affidavit from Metro Nashville Police, Michael St. Clair was issued an ankle monitor back in April.

On Sunday, he allegedly severed the strap securing the device to his ankle. Later in the day, the tracking system revealed the device was in the Cumberland River.

The police report said the device is unable to be recovered. His whereabouts were unknown.

St. Clair has a prior conviction of tampering with a monitoring device.
