Thieves Take Widow's Urn Holding Husband's Ashes

A widow has pleaded to the apparent thieves, who broke into her home, hoping they would return the urn containing her late husband's ashes.

Diane Farrington's home was targeted in a daytime burglary Friday. Farrington said she entered her home only to find a back door slightly open.

When she walked to her room, she said she discovered that thieves stole jewelry, two laptop computers and the item she said was the most valuable thing in her home: an urn containing the ashes of her husband, Steve Farrington.

“Who would take that,” Farrington asked during an interview with NewsChannel 5 Monday.

Farrington said her husband died in 2008 after a battle with cancer.  She said the urn his ashes were stored in is valued at less than $100, but the ashes inside them were priceless.

She pleaded directly for the thieves who took the urn to return the ashes.

“Please reach out, do whatever you can do to return my husband’s urn,” Farrington said.  “That urn is a part of my life, a big part of my life. Please, please, please bring it back.”

Farrington said she didn’t care about the jewelry and computers the thieves stole, and she didn’t want to press charges, as long as she can get her husband’s ashes returned - even if it was just the plastic bags they’re stored in, left on her doorstep.

“If I opened that door and saw that urn, it would just be like -- jackpot lottery -- it would mean the world to me,” Farrington said.

Farrington said the thieves who stole the urn should have a way to get in contact with her: she left a note with her name and phone number inside the urn in case anything ever happened to it.
