Police Need Help Solving Cold Case Murder

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Police need help solving a cold case murder that happened last year in South Nashville. The murder happened after a fight between two men.

Witnesses saw what happened, but police have not been able to make much progress in the case. Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 to anyone who can help.

On Friday February 29, 2008 just after 10 p.m. Jerry Gurney was walking on Thompson Place near Patricia Drive in south Nashville. Another man approached him and they started arguing.

"From eyewitness accounts we had two males that were in a verbal altercation to begin with, which escalated to a physical altercation. Several gunshots were heard," said Erid Harrison, Metro Police Department.

Police said witnesses saw the gunman run through the parking lot of Glenview Elementary School and then onto Patricia Drive.

Gurney was pronounced dead later at a nearby hospital.

"One of the eyewitnesses stated she saw a thin male black, tall with corn rows standing over the victim with a gun in his hand," said Harrison.

Police said the murder had nothing to do with drugs or gangs.

"He seemed to be an outstanding citizen - somebody who gave back to the community. He was from a good family, great parents, a good sister, and it's just a tragic crime," said Harrison.

Investigators are hoping someone will come forward with new information about the murder. They said it was likely the suspect was involved in other crimes.

"You know until they're in custody there's no telling. Obviously, they could do it again. They could be into other things. Generally we find if somebody commits a crime they're usually into other crimes, so it's important to get this guy off the street in a timely manner," said Harrison.

Police also believe it was possible that someone drove the suspect to the area. They would like that person to come forward as well.
