Nat'l Press Club Honors Smoke Detector Investigation

Posted:

A NewsChannel 5 investigation of the most common type of smoke detectors has been honored with the National Press Club's Consumer Journalism Award.

It was one of several awards announced this week that recognized small journalism outlets, as well as some of the biggest names in the industry.

"When times are tough in the news business, it is especially important to celebrate excellence in journalism," said NPC President Donna Leinwand. "These reporters represent the best of our craft. Their articles have exposed critical problems for consumers, kept our government and politicians honest and solved community problems. We are thrilled to honor them."

NewsChannel 5's "Alarming Failure" investigation exposed how ionization smoke detectors -- the type most people have in their homes -- have trouble detecting smoke from the most common type of fire -- slow-burning, smoldering fires.

Judges called the investigation "ground-breaking."

The investigation was the work of consumer investigator Jennifer Kraus, producer Kevin Wisniewski and photojournalists Bryan Staples and Mike Rose.
