Police Need Help Solving New Year's Eve Murder

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A New Year's Eve murder in South Nashville is the focus of Crime Stoppers. Masked gunmen shot and killed a man inside an apartment.

Police said they have few leads in the case and they could use your help.

It was just before 8:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve 2009. Two masked gunmen burst through the door of a duplex in the 1500 of Bell Road. They aimed their guns at the people sitting on the sofa in the living room and demanded money.

"Most of the occupants of the home or residence were Spanish speaking and really didn't understand what they were being asked," said Corey Wall with the Metro Nashville Police Department.

One man stood up to ask what was happening and one of the intruders shot him in the chest with a shot gun. The victim was Santos Leal. He died at a hospital. Police said the robbers ran out the door without taking anything except a life.

"What we're hoping for is somebody may have heard the suspects speak of this crime, speaking of trying to rob somebody or getting involved in a shooting in South Nashville, and talked to a friend or family member or somebody has heard something along those lines. We'd like to speak with them," said Wall.

Police believe the robbery and attack were not accidents.

"The house is in South Nashville off Bell Road, which is a very public area. There are hundreds of people who drive by that location every day. I don't see why the suspects would risk being seen in that area for just a random event," said Wall.

If you have information about the murder of Santos Leal call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME. You can also text Crime Stoppers anonymously, text the word CASH and your message to CRIMES.
