SEC Coaches Name Kentucky's Wall Player Of Year

Posted:

(AP) BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Kentucky freshman John Wall was named Southeastern Conference player of the year by league coaches. His peers chose Vanderbilt's Kevin Stallings as coach of the year.

Freshman of the year honors went to the Wildcats' DeMarcus Cousins while Florida's Ray Shipman was named SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Mississippi State's shotblocking center Jarvis Varnado was voted the top defensive player for the third straight year. Vandy's John Jenkins was the league's top sixth man.

Wall lived up to his billing as the nation's top recruit, leading Kentucky to a 29-win season and the SEC championship. He joins LSU's Chris Jackson (1989) as the only freshmen to be named SEC player of the year.
