Local Church Offers Free Clothes, Furniture, Toys

By Marcus Washington

LEBANON, Tenn. - To help people during the tough times, one church is giving items away to anyone in need.

On Saturday morning at Immanuel Baptist Church anyone can come get their hands on clothes, toys, dishes, bedding, furniture and food at no cost.

Volunteers were hard at work unloading trailers on Friday preparing for the event.

"We have a united heart to help those who are having a tough time right now," said Pastor John Hunn.

Two weeks ago, Pastor Hunn spoke to his congregation about lending a helping hand, and after hundreds of people joined together - they've filled their gym with just about anything a person could imagine.

"Anybody that has a need, if we can meet that need here's what we have, what do you need?" said Hunn.

Hunn said because of the tough economy, he felt an event that gave free items to those in need was important. He said the event can help people who are struggling to pay bills. They won't have to worry about getting new toys or shoes for their children.

"I have an electric bill due, so to be able to come and look around to see if there is anything I could use, it helps," said shopper Robin Bennett.

Getting new clothes for himself always falls at the bottom of the list for Bennett, but he said it was a good time to spoil himself because it was free.

"It's always good to have a good suit, and they are not cheap," said Bennett who found a suit and more.

Pastor Hunn said he fears many people will be too ashamed to receive the help they're giving, but he said there's nothing shameful about getting help from God's workers.

"Only God knows how this will workout, but everybody's load will get lightened to some degree. We hope that it lightens a lot of loads for people and let them know we care about them," said Bennett.

Everyone is hoping they will give out all the items, but if not, what's left over will be donated to Community Help Center.

The church is hoping to have another Community Share event later this year.

On Saturday, March 27 Maple Hill Church of Christ is hold a similar event called, March Community Giveaway. That event will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the church's Fellowship Hall.
