Coal’s Influence On Tennessee Politicians


NewsChannel 5 Investigates reviewed the most recent campaign finance reports of the gubernatorial candidates. We identified contributors who worked for coal companies or for companies associated with the coal industry. 

For the largest contributors, we reviewed all of their state-wide political contributions. Some made contributions to candidates for state senate or state representative.

Ramsey's Biggest Coal Contributors

United Coal

Founder Jim McGlothlin; Joe and John Gregory have an ownership share of the company.
(See January 31, 2006 news release from United Coal) The Gregory family and United Coal constributed more than $40,000 to Ramsey's campaign for governor.

In April 2009, Metinvest from the Ukraine bought United Coal and became its parent company. (See release)

Powell Companies

Founder James Powell named to Ramsey's Finance Team in June 2009. The company operates a mineral division which builds coal preparation plants. (See Powell Construction website)

Powell Companies employees and relatives contributed more than $70,000 to Ramsey's campaign for governor plus $20,000 to RAAMPAC.

Alpha Natural Resources

Coal company based in Virginia. (See Alpha Natural Resources website)

Alpha Natural Resources employees, including several top executives and their families contributed more than $18,000 to Ramsey's campaign for governor.
