Police Search For Shooter In Young Man's Death

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Somebody shot and killed a man as he stepped onto his porch in North Nashville, and police said the victim may have been trying to quit a gang.

On Wednesday, August 26, 2009 Ernest Smith was shot and killed. Police do not have any suspects.

"Patrol arrived on the scene and found Mr. Smith deceased on his front porch," said Willie Middleton with the Metro Nashville Police Department.

Police said the incident happened after the 20 year old walked home from a nearby friend's house in the 800 block of Charlie Place.

"I do know he was two doors away from his house. He called his sister to say open the door," said Middleton.

Smith's sister told investigators when she opened the door she heard her brother say something. Then she got a brief look at the killer.

"She said he had his back turned to the door and was saying something like, ‘hold up little buddy, hold up.' After that she saw a muzzle flash from a gun and saw a dark figure running between the houses," said Middleton.

Police said there's a possibility that a gang member intended to kill Smith.

"I have received some information that he was a gang member and that he was in the process of dropping his flag, meaning getting out of the gang," said Middleton.
