NASHVILLE, Tenn. - It's been nearly a year since a brutal attack and attempted rape in Hermitage and the case remains unsolved.
The attack happened just before midnight on August 17, 2009.
Police said a man stepped outside on the patio of his apartment in the 12-hundred block of Massman Drive to smoke a cigarette when he was confronted by a man with a handgun.
Investigators said he forced the man and his girlfriend into a back bedroom of the apartment.
"Once they were in the back bedroom the suspect forced them to disrobe, take their clothes off and made the female resident lie on the bed where he attempted to rape her," said Heather Baltz of the Metro Nashville Police Department.
Police say when the woman resisted the gunman hit her several times.
"The suspect struck the victim in the head with the handgun causing significant injuries to her face and she had to have extensive surgeries to repair what was done by the suspect," Baltz said.
The man jumped off the bed and allegedly stole some things before running out the door. The victims told police the gunman was an African American who was over six feet tall and weighed about 280 pounds. He also wore a green or turquoise bandana.
"Clearly because of the level of violence used in this crime this is not likely his first offense and that's why we're very concerned about him being in the public and not apprehended at this point," said Baltz.
If you have information about this attack, police said to call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME. Crime Stoppers also accepts tips online.
