NASHVILLE, Tenn. - His wife was arrested, his four children were taken and his house was condemned the very same day he returned from serving in Iraq.

On Friday, in an off-camera interview, Jesse Kifer spoke with NewsChannel 5 about his bittersweet homecoming.

Kifer landed in Smyrna Thursday, the very same day that his wife, Dorothy Kifer and her four small children, were taken from their Antioch rental home.

Police said the children were found among dead dogs, with no air conditioning, furniture or running water. Out side the home, Dorothy Kifer was also apparently struggling to take care of horses, goats, donkeys, chickens and dogs.

On her facebook page Dorothy Kifer said, "Roasting in the sweltering heat; have way too much to get done still before Jesse gets home; and omg, TIRED! Am operating in overwhelm."

Jesse Kifer said he knew his wife was rescuing animals and trying to find them homes. He said he didn't realize how overwhelmed she had become trying to do the best for the animals and their children.

His main concern now is getting back his kids.

Dorothy Kifer was arrested and charged with child neglect and aggravated animal cruelty.
