Police Searching For Clues In New Year's Eve Murder
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Masked gunmen murdered a man on New Year's Eve in South Nashville. Now, police hope someone can help them track down the killers.
Metro police said the two masked men burst through the door of a duplex in the 1500 block of Bell Road on New Year's Eve 2009. They aimed their guns at the people sitting on the sofa in the living room and demanded money.
"Most of the occupants of the home or residence were Spanish speaking and really didn't understand what they were being asked," said Corey Wall with the Metro Police Department.
Police said one man, Santos Leal, stood up to ask what was happening and one of the intruders shot him in the chest with a shot gun.
He died at a hospital. Police said the robbers ran out the door without stealing anything.
"What we're hoping for is somebody may have heard the suspects speak of this crime, speaking of trying to rob somebody or getting involved in a shooting in South Nashville and talked to a friend or family member or somebody has heard something along those lines and we'd like to speak with them," said Wall.
Police believe the robbery and attack were not accidents.
"The house is in South Nashville off Bell Road, which is a very public area," added Wall. "There are hundreds of people who drive by that location every day. I don't see why the suspects would risk being seen in that area for just a random event."
