FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Franklin Police have joined several other cities in offering crime maps online. Residents can see what's happening in or near their neighborhood.
William Roberson has lived in one Franklin neighborhood for more than 30 years.
"I mean in this day and time you can't ever, you never know what's going on," Roberson said.
Roberson said crime has never been a big issue, but he understands it can happen anywhere.
"It would be nice to know you could have access to check things out and see what's happening," said Roberson.
This week, Franklin Police joined dozens of other communities offering on line crime maps. They have set up a crime mapping web site through CrimeReports.com.
"We want the public to be informed. We need their help," Franklin Sergeant Charles Warner said. "For example if you're interested in what happened at the Franklin Plaza Shopping Center you can click on it and it shows it was a traffic related offense."
Every time an officer takes a report you can see what happened and where.
"The report is taken and within a 24 hour period it's pulled into the crime mapping software, so it's available to citizens on demand," Warner said.
Warner said it's a tool both citizens and police can use to keep neighborhoods safe.
"And so members of the community get a very early look at crime and crime trends that have occurred or are occurring in their neighborhoods," said Warner.
You can also get a crime alert that will tell you if something happens in or near your neighborhood.
Roberson said he doesn't expect trouble, but he said neighbors might want to keep tabs on what's going on.
"I don't necessarily think I would use it, but we have some single ladies that live around here and I'm sure they'd love to keep up with what's going on around them," Roberson said.
Nashville, Mt. Juliet, Columbia also offer crime mapping sites.
