LA VERGNE, Tenn. – Police have arrested the boyfriend of a woman whose body was discovered in her home southeast of Nashville.
Police said 55-year-old Maximalian Ocon was taken into custody in Houston on Friday. He was preparing to board an international flight when customs agents stopped him just in time.
Detectives believe Ocon, a U.S. citizen and a native of El Salvador, strangled and beat his girlfriend to death inside her home.
Police found Rafaela Ortiz's body inside her home at 1 Sima Shabat Court in La Vergne on Thursday night after someone called and said they overheard someone talking about a dead body.
Family and friends came to the home on Friday evening and stopped for a moment to grieve at the front steps. While there is much sadness, there is some small degree of relief that the suspect in this case is now behind bars.
Police said Officers said Ocon had lived in the home with Ortiz, and was a person of interest because he was believed to have left the home around 1 p.m. Thursday.
Police said the woman's daughter was home at the time of the crime, but had no idea her mother was dead. The daughter is in her 20's, but is deaf and cannot speak, so officers couldn't immediately get information from her.
A La Vergne officer who knows sign language also worked to get more information from the daughter. She had told officers she thought her mother was with Ocon.
La Vergne police are now hoping to extradite Ocon and bring him back to Tennessee. He is charged with first degree murder
