Robbie Caldwell, Vanderbilt's head coachNASHVILLE, Tenn.- After one year on the job, Robbie Caldwell is stepping down as Vandy's Head football coach. The Commodores have a record of two wins and nine losses on the season, and have lost six in a row. The University expected more, and both parties felt the program wasn't moving in the right direction.
The university announced the move following a meeting between Robbie Caldwell and David Williams, Vandy's Vice Chancellor of University Affairs and Athletics.
Caldwell broke the news to his players before the news conference. He was initially named interim head coach in July when Bobby Johnson retired just before the start of preseason practice. The university later stripped the interim tag from Caldwell's title, but that didn't last long.
During that meeting, it was agreed that it was in the best interest of the university and Caldwell that he step down.
"I've gotten an opportunity to be sitting this seat, so I have to thank David Williams for having that opportunity. You know it is what it is. I appreciate the opportunity, and we'll move on from here," said Robbie Caldwell, head coach.
"Coach Caldwell and I discussed the future of the Vanderbilt football program and it was a mutual agreement that Vanderbilt University and the football program need to go in a different direction and we plan to do that immediately," said Vice Chancellor, David Williams.
Caldwell came to Vanderbilt in 2002 with Bobby Johnson as the Commodores' offensive line coach. Vanderbilt will be hiring a search firm to look for a new coach.
Caldwell will be coaching his final game Saturday night at home against Wake Forest.
