NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A late afternoon fire does extensive damage to a home in East Nashville, just three days before Christmas. It happened at about 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
James Baker says he saw the smoke coming from his basement, and ran to a neighbor's house for help.
"I grabbed the fire extinguisher, but knew it wasn't going to do any good," he said.
Neighbors called 911 and firefighters quickly arrived on scene. They rescued a dog from the home and salvaged a small stack of wrapped Christmas gifts, but most of the family's belongings were destroyed.
"We've been here over 21 years, and we've got a lot of stuff in the house that we'll never be able to replace," said Anna Baker. "But we've got all the memories of all the sleepovers and birthday parties, 21 Christmases here."
Saturday would have been their 22nd Christmas on Bobby Avenue. Instead, the Bakers will spend it at a family member's home. The Red Cross was on the scene with them Wednesday night and will provide some assistance to help the family get back on their feet.
No one was injured in the fire.
