NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Crews will again block off several streets in downtown Nashville for repairs to several water lines.
At 6 p.m. Wednesday, traffic was cut off at 8th Avenue and Broadway and it re-opened to drivers at 6 a.m. Thursday. It will happen again Thursday from 6 p.m. until Friday at 6 a.m.
The repairs all stem from work that began one year ago. A combination of freezing temperatures and old pipes led to a massive mess in downtown Nashville last winter.
Several water lines broke, forcing crews to dig up the sidewalks and shut down several blocks.
This project ranks among the water department's more significant infrastructure efforts in recent years. Many of the lines were more than a 100 years old.
The work being done Wednesday and Thursday is part of one of the last phases of construction. Final paving won't be done until the spring.
Metro Water wanted to replace the lines for some time, but the breaks simply sped up the process.
