Thrift Store Gives Jobs To Special Needs Adults

FRANKLIN, Tenn. - When work became scarce for their autistic daughter, a local couple took matters into their own hands, and opened a thrift store where special needs students are encouraged to work.

For the first time in a long while, Sarah Krikac has a job and money of her own.  But most importantly, the autistic 28-year-old has friends.

This is the impact Sara's parents had hoped for, when they opened up shop seven years ago.

"Our thrift store really was birthed out of a need that we had as parents to find a job for our autistic daughter there were no jobs in the community and the more we looked into it the more difficult it became," Dave Krikac said.

In Williamson County alone, some 900 special needs adults have nowhere to work. Unless they come to the Krikac's shop.

Some 30 people, many of whom are special needs, are able to work here.  That's because donated items sold in the non-profit shop support their salary.

Some special needs adults sort, hand and tag clothing while other reprogram computers, and work on shipping projects.

"They've got gifts and talents that we don't have the fun part is finding the right kid and the right job and fitting those two together," Krikac said.

Finally, Sara has the things she's always wanted for herself: a job, friends, and money. But if there's one thing her parents have learned, Sara can have even more.

"Sara can do so much more than we ever anticipated but without that opportunity we would never know it's amazing what these young adults can do if they're given the opportunity," Krikac said.

The store's motto is "Stuff Equals Jobs".  The more stuff you donate, the more jobs will be available for special needs adults.

Our Thrift Store is open Tuesday through Saturday and will happily accept your tax-deductable donations.
