(AP) KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - An attorney for Tennessee safety Brent Brewer said the sophomore charged with misdemeanor domestic assault is innocent.

Volunteers coach Derek Dooley suspended the 22-year-old after he was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge.

According to an arrest warrant, a woman accused Brewer of putting his hands around her throat and attempting to strangle her while preventing her from leaving his apartment.

Brewer was arrested early Sunday morning and released that evening on $1,500 bail. His attorney, Don Bosch, said in a statement Monday he believes Brewer is innocent based on his initial investigation into the incident.

Brewer played in every game for the Vols in 2010, recording 30 tackles, defending three passes and recovering a fumble.
