NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A police shootout in West Tennessee ended with the death of a Rutherford County teen.

Police said 18-year-old Chastain Montgomery led officers on a high speed chase from Haywood County to Tipton County on Monday.

A Haywood County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed Montgomery. The officer is on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Metro Police said they believe he robbed a man of his wallet, cell phone and pickup truck at a Nashville construction site just three hours before his death.

Police said 59-year-old Bill Petty was inside a trailer at a job site on Elm Hill Pike around 6 a.m. Monday when a masked gunman came in and demanded the keys to his pickup truck, wallet and cell phone. The gunman fled in Petty's 2008 Chevrolet pickup truck.

The truck was equipped with OnStar and was determined to be in the Brownsville area around 8:40 a.m. Haywood County deputies spotted the truck and followed it into Tipton County, where Montgomery ultimately stopped near the intersection of Highways 59 and 70.

The Tipton County Sheriff's office reported that Montgomery got out of the truck and fired multiple shots at law enforcement. That's when they fired back, killing him.

Metro Police had an attempted murder warrant for Montgomery. Police believe he shot another teenager in Antioch outside a hair product store in January.
