House Speaker John Boehner
NASHVILLE, Tenn.- One of the most powerful politicians in Washington was in Music City Sunday night. So what does House Speaker John Boehner think about that possible government shut down?
"The House has passed legislation, reflecting the will of the people that would keep the government running through October while cutting spending. The leader of the United States Senate has refused to allow a vote on this legislation, so the House will pass a shorter-term bill that will also keep the government running while including reasonable spending cuts at the same time," said Boehner.
Speaker Boehner was in town for the National Religious Broadcasters convention. Boehner spoke about the tough times in D.C. about a national debt that's on track to eclipse the size of our entire economy this year.
"In other words, we're broke, broke, going on bankrupt. Just as a bankrupt business has trouble creating jobs, so does a bankrupt country," said Boehner.
Lawmakers have to come up with a spending plan before the current budget expires on Friday. If not, there could be a government shutdown.
