Council, Representative Battle Over Non-Discrimination Bill

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A battle is brewing between Metro Council and State Representative Glen Casada over who sets rules for local government.

The final vote on a non-discrimination bill for contractors doing business with the city was scheduled for Tuesday, but has been delayed because of spring break.

The ordinance would require companies to adopt, in writing, a non-discrimination policy that includes protections for gay, lesbian, and transgender workers.

Representative Casada said that bill goes too far. He has filed legislation that would limit requirements of companies doing business with city when it comes to human resources issues.

Some council members are expected to head him off on Tuesday. They plan to introduce a memorializing resolution that opposes any state law that interferes with local government power to self govern.
