In-Home Energy Efficiency Evaluation Could Save Money

EAGLEVILLE, Tenn. - We're all looking for ways to cut costs when it comes to utilities. Now, TVA is offering a new program to do just that. They'll send someone to your house, tell you what to upgrade, and even help you pay for it.

When Jenny Taylor paid $350 a month for electric and $150 a month for gas to power her Eagleville home, she knew there was a problem.

"I knew then I needed to do something, there was something I could do," said

She looked to TVA's newest program where local utilities send out people like Mandy Martin for in-home energy evaluations.

Martin found several ways that Taylor could easily improve energy efficiency in her home.

Taylor made those recommended improvements, and spent a good chunk of change doing so.

"With the new unit duct work insulation and door probably roughly $10,000.  But her pay back? She'll have that money back within 5, 6, 7 years," Mandy Martin, with Middle Tennessee Electric, said.

Taylor said it was worth it.  She cut her usage by 70 percent plus TVA gave her a $500 credit on her electric bill for making the upgrades.

An in-home energy evaluation costs $150, but the fee is usually waived if you follow through with the recommendations.

If you make the upgrades, TVA will give you credit for half of what you spend, up to $500.

TVA is offering the program to conserve energy and avoid building more generation plants.
