CENTERVILLE, Tenn. – The county jail administrator who resigned last week, amid criminal charges he had sexual contact with an inmate, was an impeccable employee, according to the man who hired him.

"According to state inspectors and all, he had a top jail," Randal Ward, the sheriff in Hickman County, told NewsChannel 5.

He was referring to Quinton Jerry Wasden, the Nunnelly, TN, man indicted last week on one count of sexual contact with inmates.

"As far as inspection-wise, all records, cleanliness of the jail, manners of the jail and all, we were one of the top jails in middle Tennessee," the sheriff continued.

Wasden, Ward's jail administrator for nearly five years now, stepped down last week after being arrested by the TBI. Ward said the bureau had just wrapped a roughly one-year investigation into a female inmate's allegations.

"Could've been a couple of times that I know of that the incident happened," Ward said.

The sheriff is not at liberty to elaborate on the details of the TBI investigation; but he did confirm to NewsChannel 5 that the alleged misconduct did happen on jail property, though not inside a jail cell.

"(Wasden) talked with me, assured me that this incident didn't happen," the sheriff recalled of a conversation when the female inmate initially came forward with her claim.

Now, Wasden is again maintaining his innocence, according to the sheriff.

He has hired a private attorney, and did not return NewsChannel 5's phone calls Thursday night at his home in Nunnelly, Tennessee.

The charge is a Class-E felony- and carries a maximum sentence of one to two years.
