NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Victims of last week's storms and associated flooding may qualify for tax relief from the Internal Revenue Service.
Bradley, Greene, Hamilton, and Washington counties have been declared federal disaster areas.
According to a news release from the IRS, the declaration permits the agency to postpone certain deadlines for taxpayers who live in or have a business in those counties.
Affected taxpayers will also be able to claim disaster-related losses on their federal income tax return for this year or last year.
The IRS automatically identifies taxpayers in federal disaster areas for filing and payment relief. Disaster-affected taxpayers who reside or have a business outside one of those counties can also request tax relief by calling the IRS disaster hotline at 1-866-562-5227.
