SPARTA, Tenn. - The ACLU has settled a case with White County Schools involving Bible distribution in the classroom.
The ACLU represented the parent of a 5th grader in White County whose child walked up to get a Bible because the ACLU said she was afraid she would be ostracized by her teacher and classmates if she didn't.
As a result of the settlement, school officials will only allow Bibles to be distributed as part of a forum used to distribute both religious and non-religious materials.
School officials will also limit contact between students and individuals distributing religious texts. White County schools will also refrain from promoting the availability of religious materials to the exclusion of other materials.
They will also require clear disclaimers of school endorsement to be posted at the distribution site.
