Fairgrounds Supporters Go Door-To-Door With Petition

Posted:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A final push to get the future of the state fairgrounds onto the ballot is underway. On Tuesday, supporters circulating a referendum petition went door-to-door.

Metro Council Member Jamie Hollin organized the push to gather the 16,000 signatures necessary to get the issue on the ballot in August.

As of last Wednesday, supporters had already collected 10,000 signatures.

If it succeeds and voters approve, the fairgrounds could not be demolished or changed without the Metro Council's approval.

Meanwhile, Mayor Karl Dean's office said it has serious concerns about obligating the city to a state fair and racetrack that they say is losing money.
