Memorial Day Weekend Traffic Deaths Down In Tenn.

Posted:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Safety Department said fewer people were killed on Tennessee roads over Memorial Day weekend than last year.

Preliminary figures indicated 10 people died in traffic crashes over the long weekend this year, compared with 13 in 2010 and 16 in 2009.

Six of this year's fatal crashes were single vehicle wrecks, while four involved multiple cars. Five deaths occurred in vehicles - including three who were not wearing a seatbelt. Four of those killed were motorcyclists and one was a pedestrian.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol's enhanced enforcement and visibility efforts through the Click It or Ticket campaign run through Thursday.

The highest number of traffic fatalities over a Memorial Day weekend was 26 in 1973, while five fatalities in 2002 were the fewest on record.
