Man Dies In Ocoee River Rapids When Raft Flips

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - A state wildlife agency spokesman said an autopsy will hopefully show what caused the death of a man who was dumped in the Ocoee River on a whitewater outing when a guided raft overturned.

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency spokesman Dan Hicks said the victim, 36-year-old Jay McKelroy of Arlington, was wearing a life jacket and helmet when the raft carrying five other people and a guide flipped Sunday.

Hicks told the Chattanooga Times Free Press the raft-related fatality is the first on the Ocoee that the agency has worked in more than 15 years.

Hicks said an autopsy is being performed.

The raft flipped in rapids near the Ocoee Whitewater Center.  Hicks said the others got back on and discovered McKelroy face-down in the river. Rescuers attempted CPR.
