LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Four couples from southern Indiana are asking a federal judge to force the state to recognize same-sex marriages from other states and issue marriage licenses to gay couples. The plaintiffs told reporters in Louisville that the recent debate over a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage in Indiana spurred their suit.
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - House Speaker Greg Stumbo says the House appears likely to go along with the budget cuts to higher education proposed by Gov. Beshear. The House budget committee is expected to approve a two-year budget plan next week. House action on the budget is expected next week.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - State regulators have finished all required inspections of surface mines in the recent fiscal year, an improvement on the previous year's 88 percent rate. A report from the U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement says a sharp downturn in eastern Kentucky's coal production helped inspectors hit the mark.
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (AP) - Brig. Gen. Peggy Combs is the first woman to take command over Fort Knox and U.S. Army Cadet Command. Combs, who's served in the Army for 28 years, succeeds Maj. Gen. Jeff Smith in the role.
