Teachers Take Part In ‘Summer School' At Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A group of Metro teachers are getting a lesson in meteorology that they can take into the classroom. It's all a part of a program geared towards giving students an extra boost in science.

Teachers from Stratford and Hillsboro High Schools are participating in the inter-disciplinary research program.

It's a partnership between Vanderbilt University and Metro Schools. University professors are holding a summer school of sorts for teachers, and prepping them with different scientific methods that can be used for students in the fall.

"A lot of the stuff a lot of us haven't done since college so it's a refresher for us. For some of us it's new," said science teacher Brian Harrell.

"We actually have the teachers from the different disciplines: English, math and science teachers here working through some of the activities the students will actually be doing this year so that they can kind of get a taste of what the students will be doing," said Tiffany Ellis Farmer with Vanderbilt.

Teachers are confident the tools and lessons they learn this summer will be key in improving student performance in the upcoming school year.

The month long program ends this week. The school district picked which teachers would take part.
