Gaylord Announces Country Christmas Program

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It may not feel like Christmas time, but officials at Gaylord's Opryland Resort are already getting ready for the holidays now.

The resort announced its plans for their 28th annual "A Country Christmas." The new program will feature characters from DreamWorks Animation films like Shrek, Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda.

"It's 90 degrees out here today but the Christmas spirit is alive and well here at Gaylord Opryland Resort," said Opryland resort Senior Vice President Peter Weien. "Christmas has always been a time when this place shines, and 2011 will be no exception."

Weien said the traditional shows would get a reboot for the 2011 season.

The Radio City Rockettes will celebrate their tenth year at Opryland with a new production, featuring brand new scenes and costumes. The wooden soldiers and 12 days of Christmas dances – as well as the living nativity - will remain part of the show.

The Louise Mandrell Christmas dinner party will also be back with a new show.

"Merry Madagascar" will be the theme for the ICE program, with 2 million pounds of ice sculptures of the show's popular characters – some as tall as 20 feet. The show will be housed in a brand new facility.

Children will get the chance to meet and take pictures with DreamWorks characters including Shrek, Puss in Boots, Alex the Lion and Po from Kung Fu Panda.

"Guests can now animate their holiday vacation at Opryland with beloved characters," said Meier, "Imagine children dining with their favorite ogre at a festive, interactive character meal or decorating gingerbread houses with Gingy."

Each night will feature a holiday parade through the resort.

Officials said preparations take about three months, and workers must begin in July to be ready for the holiday event. Over 2 million holiday lights are strung around the resort.

"A Country Christmas" will kick off November 18 just in time for Thanksgiving and the holiday season.
