LEBANON, Tenn. – At Lebanon High School, English teacher and baseball coach Brian Black still gets chills when he hears the train just outside his classroom.
"It was like out of a movie. You just don't expect that to happen," said Black. "It was scripted. I mean, I'm just glad it turned out as well as it did."
On his way to work Tuesday a man driving a pickup in front of him seemed to be having a problem.
"That he was having a seizure while he was driving because I saw his arm was stiff," Black said.
Thursday he showed us the very spot where he and a city worker both pulled over to help.
"It kind of brings back some of the thoughts," Black showed us. "Hit the tracks and he kind of spun out and hit right here."
The only problem was, their problems didn't stop there.
"I called 911 and told them where we were at and then within 25 to 30 seconds is when we heard the train sound," he said.
The Music City Star was coming down the tracks.
"Neither one of us said a word, but we both looked at each other. It was basically like you've got to be kidding me," Black recalled.
The worker ran to stop the train while Black pulled the driver out. The conductor was able to see the city worker's signals to stop, and was able to halt the train in time.
"If it was a freighter, we might not be as lucky," said Black who spent the entire day worrying, until finally speaking to the mother of 20 year-old Nic Masters of Mt. Juliet.
Karen Masters' words were almost too much.
"She just said I'm so grateful for helping my son, and you're the reason why he's here today," he said getting choked up Thursday.
Now he's dodging the term "hero", saying he hopes anyone would do the same.
"I guess I just don't think that what I did was extraordinary I just helped somebody else that needed help," Black went on to say.
Karen Masters said she's thankful both men saved her son's life. She told NewsChannel 5 he's never had medical issues before, and doctors are trying to figure out what went wrong.
