SPRINGFIELD, Tenn.- It's been a violent and deadly summer in Springfield. Within the past month and a half, the town has dealt with three homicides, the only three this year.

A woman and two 20-year-old men have all been shot to death since late June.

The most recent was early Saturday morning when 20-year-old Chris Nash, a well known football player in town, was shot to death off Main Street.

"He was loving, joked around, he just loved to have fun, and I enjoyed him as being one of my adopted sons," said friend, Sheila Dowlen.

Dowlen said Nash came over often to hang out with friends. But early Saturday would be the last time.

"I walked over to see who it was, and when I saw it was him it hurt me real bad cause he was like one of my babies," said Dowlen.

Someone gunned down Nash outside Dowlen's bedroom where stray bullets nearly took her life as well.

"One of the bullets did go through my trailer at the top, but then the next one went in him," said Dowlen. And now a second burial for a 20-year-old this week is underway.

"My advice for the family that lost the teen is just to remain close," said Kim Boyd who buried 20-year-old Montez Robertson last Friday. Robertson was shot and killed on a street corner, just a half a mile from where Nash was killed. But police say they are two completely unrelated crimes.  "I don't believe there is a connection whatsoever," said Lt. Jimmy Grogan.

Police say three homicides in a month is very unusual for Springfield, and they hope anyone who knows details about the most recent one will come forward.

"Somebody out here knows something, but nobody is talking," said Dowlen.

The first homicide happened in early June when a woman was shot in the face. Police say they do have suspects two of the three homicides, but no arrests have been made.
