Local Events Kick off Labor Day Weekend

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-  Labor Day Weekend in Nashville is filled with events for the family, including the Western vs. Kentucky game at LP Field.

Thursday started the holiday weekend as the Big Red of Western Kentucky battled the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Before the 8:15 kick-off, Laura Bell Bundy performed at a pre-game concert at Riverfront Park.

Starting Friday at 7 p.m., the American Folk Festival is expected to lure in thousands of people as the festival takes over Bicentennial State Capital Park until Sunday at 6 p.m.

Big & Rich along with Gretchen Wilson will perform for fans Friday night in Whites Creek, Tenn. at The Woods at Fontanel.

Football fans will also enjoy the action-packed John Merritt Classic on Saturday along with John Hiatt at the Ryman later Saturday night.

According to Butch Spyridon, president of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau, Labor Day weekend has traditionally been a slow time in Music City, but things are changing.

"If we can build this into something, then we will book in summer with the Music Fest in the beginning and a lot of diverse activity on the other end," said Spyridon.

He adds, "With a little luck, it will mean several million dollars in unplanned visitor spending. Anytime we can get some fresh dollars, we call it importing cash into the city; it's a good day for us."
