State Report Looks At Race To The Top Spending

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A new study from the state comptroller's office examined the way local school districts are spending their portion of Tennessee's $500 million award of federal Race to the Top funds.

Every local district received a portion of the money, which was divided evenly between the state and the local agencies and is being distributed over four years.

The report found the money being used for a wide variety of activities intended to improve the schools.

Those include more than $20 million for instructional coaches for teachers, another $17.5 million for leadership training and $16.9 million for incentive pay plans.

Individual district grants range from about $45,000 for the Richard City Special School District to $68.6 million for Memphis City Schools.
