NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce joined other community leaders on Thursday night to officially kick off Hispanic Heritage month.
Organizers said the event celebrates the importance of Hispanics in the Music City.
They are joining folks all over the country, who are spending the next 30 days recognizing the Hispanic influence.
"We are a part of the city. We are ten percent according to the census data and it's 50.5 million around the country. We are celebrating the contributions, I think it's a great place to start the conversation about being all a part of a big family," said Yuri Cunza with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Hispanic Heritage was first recognized in 1968. Twenty years later, President Reagan extended the national celebration to a full month.
