NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Cities
all over the country are celebrating the birthday of the United Nations, and
Nashville is no different.
The Cordell Hull Chapter
of the UNA USA held the celebration at the Parthenon Sunday. This year, the celebration benefits the UN
Foundation's Girl Up campaign. It was
established to address the needs of adolescent girls in developing countries.
Girl Up mobilizes American girls to raise awareness and money for
programs helping some of the world's hardest-to-reach adolescent girls.
"So the reason why so
development funding goes to girls is that funding to support youth programs
goes to boys 80-90% of the time. And we know there needs to be programs
targeted to girls specifically," said Melissa Hillebrener with Girl Up.
