Close To 4,000 Turn Out For Nissan Job Fair

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Close to four thousand people showed up at Murfreesboro job fair on Wednesday, hoping to land one of the 1,100 jobs available at Nissan's Smyrna plant.

Organizers said people showed up as early as 4 a.m., and waited hours to be interviewed.

"I've been here too long, too long," said job seeker Evelyn Alajemba.  "Too long for me, but you know, when you're waiting on something like this, it's worth the wait."

The long wait didn't deter this group, though.  Many of them have been on the unemployment line for several years.

"I've been there and done that," said Jeremy Johnson, another job seeker.  "It's rough.  There are no jobs out there, and everyone is getting laid off."

A spokesman for the Tennessee Department of Labor said they always expect a big crowd during events like this, but even they were caught off-guard by the amount of applicants.

"There's a lot of people right now that are dedicated.  I mean, their full time job right now is finding a full time job," said R.J. Sherr with the Department of Labor.

The job fair was supposed to run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., but since so many people showed up before that 2 p.m. deadline, interviewers agreed to stay as long as it takes.

"So we're staying late and seeing every last person that was here at two," said Sherr.

The last person in line finished his interview at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

"I'm in it to win it, I'm hoping that I come out with a blessing.  Me and my family really need it," said job seeker Jimmy Morris.

The main-line production and warehousing positions up for grabs on Wednesday need to be filled by the end of February. Nissan will also be hiring for other warehouse and production-support jobs over the next 18 months.
